Europa Capital, together with Bonavista Developments, undertook the challenge of restoring Casa Burés to its original splendour and breathing a new lease of life into this modernist masterpiece.

When Bonavista’s three partners, Marcus Donaldson, Alex Miquel and Jacinto Roqueta first set foot inside the building, Casa Burés was in a state of disrepair. It had been abandoned for years and had suffered repeated acts of vandalism, with many of its furnishings and sculptures being destroyed in the process. In addition, many metal features, such as its copper pipes, the lift motor and the lamp held by the iconic bear in the entrance hall had been stolen.

Trias de Bes describes Casa Burés as “a discovery” recalling that when he first set foot inside the building, he was astounded by the sheer amount of modernist features. “It was like entering a building frozen in time”, he describes.

He highlighted that all the professionals involved in this project fully appreciated that the building had to retain its original essence. Casa Burés was so magnificently restored thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of craftspeople who are passionate about architecture, strive to achieve quality results and have a true vocation for their work.

Vilablanch studio took charge of the Casa Burés interior design project. Their concept was designed to make a clear distinction between the old and the new. The original colours and materials were retained and restored using modernist craft techniques from the period, while the new colours and materials aimed to complement rather than imitate or overwhelm the original ones.
